Scalp, Hair & Skin - Your Questions Answered
Scalp Questions
1)What is scalp build-up and how do I know I have it? Scalp build-up is a layer of product residue, excess sebum, and dead skin cells that sit on your scalp and blocks your follicles over time. Most people have it and don't realise. The signs are: Greasy roots within a d ay of washing, hair that never truly feels clean, persistent flaking that isn't dandruff, an itchy or tight scalp, or hair that looks flat and lifeless from the root. Your scalp is skin, just like the skin on your face, it needs more than a quick rinse to stay clear. Regular shampoo cleans your hair, it rarely gets to the scalp itself.
2) Why isn't shampoo enough to keep my scalp clean? Most shampoos are formulated to clean your hair, not your scalp. The lather moves through your hair and takes surface dirt with it, but the follicles on your scalp collect product residue, dry shampoo, silicones, perspiration and natural oils that a regular shampoo simply can't shift. Over weeks and months that builds up. Your scalp needs the same level of attention as a skincare routine. That's why exfoliation, oil pre cleansing and using the right ingredients at the root make such a difference.
3) How do I exfoliate or detox my scalp at home? Start with a scalp oil massage before you wash. Apply a lightweight oil like our Serenity HHWB multi-use oil directly to your scalp in a few sections. Massage through with your fingertips for 2-3 minutes, and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Oil dissolves oil and lifts sebum, breaks down product build up that sits deepest in the follicle. Then use a scalp scrub, our Serenity HHWB scrub is designed exactly for this. Apply to a wet scalp before shampoo. Massage a spoonful of scrub into the scalp for 2 minutes and wash as normal. Do this once a week and you'll notice a difference within 2 to 3 washes. Cleaner scalp, less grease and over time, healthier hair growth. View Scrub
What makes cold pressed oil different from other oils?
1) All our oils, scrubs and balms are made with cold pressed oil. Cold pressing means the oil is extracted using pressure alone, no heat, no chemicals, no refinement. That matters because heat destroys the nutrients, antioxidants, and fatty acids that make a plant oil genuinely beneficial for skin, scalp and hair. What you're left with in a heat pressed oil is a fraction of what nature put in. Cold pressed keeps it all intact...vitamins, omegas, plant compounds...in their most potent, bioavailable form. This is why our oils work across scalp, hair, skin and body. You're getting the most honest, purest version of the ingredient, nothing added and nothing taken away.
Are Serenity Hair Health & Wellbeing shampoos and conditioners SLS-free?
1) Yes, completely. Our shampoo and conditioner contain no SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) or SLES (sodium lauryl ether sulphate) We use Sodium Cocoylisethionate and Coco Glucoside as our cleansing agents. Both derived from natural coconut sources, both gentle on the scalp, and both effective without the stripping effect that SLS causes. I f your scalp has been feeling dry, irritated or tight after washing, your shampoo's ingredients are often the first place to look. View Shampoo
Why does Serenity Hair Health & Wellbeing shampoo prioritise scalp health over lather and fragrance?
1) Because lather and fragrance are marketing, not performance. The beauty industry has spent decades convincing us that a thick foam means a better clean and a strong scent means a better product. Neither is true. Excess lather often means harsh sulfates that strip the scalp's natural barrier, Heavy synthetic fragrance is one of the most common causes of scalp irritation. We left both out on purpose. What we kept in are the ingredients that actually support a healthy scalp environment, gentle cleansers, no unnecessary fillers, and nothing your scalp has to fight against. Healthy hair starts at the root. That's what our formulas are built around. View Shampoo
