Essential Oil vs Fragrance Oil: Why the Difference Matters More Than You Think
This is one of the most important things to understand when you’re choosing “natural” products, and one of the least explained.
Essential oils are extracted directly from plants, the flower, root, leaf, or peel and they carry the natural properties of that plant along with them. Essential oils aren't just soothing for your mind and body but they behave this way on your skin and scalp too.
Fragrance oil is different. It’s created in a lab to smell like something, lavender, rose, sandalwood, without containing any of the plant at all. It smells convincing, but it offers no therapeutic benefit, and it’s far more likely to trigger sensitivity in people with reactive skin.
Here’s the part that catches people out: a product can still call itself “natural” on the label while using fragrance oil, because there’s no legal requirement stopping it. If you’re buying based on scent alone, you genuinely can’t tell the difference just from smelling it in a shop.
The only way to know is to check the ingredients list for the actual oil name (e.g. “Lavandula Angustifolia Oil”) rather than just “fragrance” or “parfum.” It’s a small thing to check, but it tells you a lot about how a brand formulates.
Simple feels good.
