The Best Natural Scalp Oil in the UK - What a Hairdresser Actually Recommends
In 25 years of working with hair and scalps professionally, I’ve tried more oils than I can count. Some were beautifully packaged. Some smelled incredible. And some actually worked.
The difference between a scalp oil that delivers results and one that just sits on the surface comes down to a few simple things: the ingredients, how it’s formulated and how you use it. Here’s what I look for, and what I’d recommend to anyone searching for the best natural scalp oil in the UK right now.
What makes a scalp oil actually good?
Not all oils are created equal. A good scalp oil should:
• Absorb into the scalp rather than just coating it
• Rebalance oil production rather than adding to the problem
• Soothe irritation without clogging follicles
• Be free from synthetic fragrance, sulphates and unnecessary fillers
The best base oils for scalp health are lightweight and non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t block your pores. Grapeseed oil is one of the best. It’s rich in linoleic acid, absorbs quickly and is genuinely balancing for both dry and oily scalps. Jojoba is another, it closely mimics the scalp’s natural sebum, which makes it exceptionally good at restoring balance. Avocado oil brings deep nourishment for drier, more sensitive scalps.
If a scalp oil leads with mineral oil, silicones or a long list of synthetic ingredients - put it back. Those might make your hair look shiny short-term but they’ll contribute to build-up and congestion over time.
Should a scalp oil be used before or after washing?
Before. Always before.
A pre-wash scalp oil is applied to a dry or slightly damp scalp before shampooing. This is important, it means the oil can do its work on the scalp without being sealed in by conditioner or sitting on top of clean hair.
Apply, massage, leave for 20 minutes minimum, then shampoo as normal. The shampoo removes the excess oil along with any buildup it’s loosened, leaving your scalp clean, calm and rebalanced.
What about scalp oils you leave in?
Leave-in scalp oils do exist but they’re a different product for a different purpose. They tend to be much lighter and are designed for daily use between washes. If you’re dealing with a dry, irritated or imbalanced scalp, a pre-wash treatment oil is where you start. Get the foundation right first.
Why multi-use matters
The best scalp oils double up. A well-formulated scalp oil made with pure plant oils will work just as effectively on the lengths of your hair and on your skin. That’s not a marketing claim, it’s just what good ingredients do.
At Serenity Hair Health & Wellbeing our natural scalp oil is blended with grapeseed, avocado and jojoba. It starts on the scalp as a pre-wash treatment, extends through the hair as a conditioning mask and finishes on the body as a nourishing skin oil. One bottle. No waste. No overloaded bathroom shelf.
The three things I always tell my clients
After 25 years, my advice is always the same:
1. Start with the scalp. Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp. Everything else is secondary.
2. Keep it simple. The more products you layer on, the harder it is to know what’s working. One good oil, used consistently, will outperform a shelf full of average products.
3. Give it time. Your scalp didn’t get out of balance overnight. A couple of weeks of consistent care and most people notice a real difference.
If you’re looking for a natural scalp oil that’s been developed by a hairdresser, made with pure plant ingredients and designed to work across your whole routine ... this is it.
Serenity’s HHWB natural scalp oil is available in three aromatherapy scents - Classic, Revive and Harmony.
